Album Release Concert — The Painted Bird: Amidst

This special concert presentation of the musical score from Pavel Zuštiak and Palissimo Company’s The Painted Bird: Amidst is a celebration of the official release of the recording by Christian Frederickson, Ryan Rumery, and Jason Noble. These performer/composers accompanied the world premiere of the dance work at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in July of 2011.
The album was recorded by Kevin Ratterman at The Funeral Home studio in Louisville, KY, with additional recording in New York by John Kilgore and Matt Hubbs. It was mixed in Louisville by Ratterman, along with Frederickson, Noble, and Rumery, and mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Co. This album represents the culmination of more than five years of work, which was indelibly affected by the death of Jason Noble, from cancer, in 2012. It took some time, but we think this is the album Jason would have wanted to make. Christian and Ryan are delighted to have William Flynn playing bass for this performance; Bill played for the performances of the complete Painted Bird trilogy, at La MaMa in 2013.

This music was created in collaboration with Pavel Zuštiak, Nicholas Bruder, Lindsey Dietz-Marchant, Robert Flynt, Joe Levasseur, and Keith Skretch for part two of Palissimo Company’s The Painted Bird Trilogy, which premiered at the Baryshnikov Arts Center on June 23rd, 2011.

CHRISTIAN FREDERICKSON is a Juilliard-trained viola player who began playing music with artists and rockers and now makes music and sound for theater and contemporary dance, specializing in performances with live music. He was a founding member of Rachel’s, an instrumental band from Louisville, KY who released six albums on Touch and Go Records between 1995 and 2003. Frederickson also played in The Young Scamels with Jason Noble and Greg King; their album “Tempest” was the score for a production of the Shakespeare play at Actors Theatre of Louisville. On his own, Frederickson has released three albums at christianfrederickson.bandcamp.com: “The Painted Bird | Bastard” is the score for a contemporary dance piece of the same name, “Death Metal Angola” was written for a documentary film by Jeremy Xido about the rock scene in Angola, and “Teratogeny” is a collection of music from various film, dance, and theater projects. He has performed, with Rachel’s and as a soloist throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, and has collaborated with a handful of other bands and musicians including Rodan, Shipping News, Seluah, Rachel Grimes, Rivulets, Mission of Burma, The For Carnation, Per Mission, Samara Lubelski, and Shannon Wright. www.christianfrederickson.com
JASON NOBLE was a musician who lived in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife, Kristin. He performed in the bands Rodan, Rachel’s and Shipping News. Working with the Quarterstick Record label was a major influence for him, inspiring every facet of making and releasing albums. He was also happy to work with such fine bands as Gold Jacket Club, Shannonwright and Coliseum. Jason’s music (with Rachel’s and other bands) has been featured in numerous film and television productions including Hancock, Any GivenSunday, Friday Nights Lights, The Art Of The Steal and the PBS documentary series POV. He wrote original music for the films Our House and Rotating Mirror – directed by Greg King. Jason has performed live concerts for the BBC, NPR “Weekend Edition” and WNYC’s “New Sounds” program.
In 2009 he was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma (a rare cancer type). Through the financial generosity of many bands, artists and friends he received excellent care at MD Anderson in Houston. You could say he strongly supported health care for all people on purely moral grounds. Jason passed away August 4th, 2012.
RYAN RUMERY is a musician, composer, and music producer. His music is featured in the films How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change (Sundance 2016, HBO, iTunes, Amazon Video), City of Gold (Sundance, SXSW 2015, IFC/Sundance Selects, iTunes, Amazon Video, Hulu), The Hobby, Those People, Gatewood, SynchroNYCity, FlowerMan, and And, Apart (Golden Door International Film Festival 2016, Local Sightings Film Festival 2016.) His composition “End of Day” was used in CNN’s Death Row Stories episode “Murder in Paris.” Web series work includes Emergency Contacts and The Purple House. Recent theatrical scores include the Pulitzer Prize-winning Between Riverside and Crazy (Atlantic/Second Stage), and Fool For Love (Broadway). The podcast “How I Got Here” features his music as its theme.
He performs drums and piano live with Palissimo’s triology of modern dances The Painted Bird (KioSK Festival, Slovakia, Baryshnikov Arts Center, La MaMa, PS122, Legion Arts, Wexner Center for the Arts). As a drummer, he performs with the Obie Award-winning The Secret City, as well as with Jeremy Bass, the Whale Tales, Big Weather, and other musicians.
Rumery was Sound Consultant for Sufjan Stevens’ Round Up at the Barbican and Edinburgh International Festival. He also consulted on the Nonesuch at 50 Festival at BAM for George Crumb’s “Ancient Voices of Children” featuring Dawn Upshaw and Gilbert Kalish, and a program of music by Steve Reich and John Adams, featuring Alarm Will Sound.
As an album producer and musician, he has recorded with Jacob Valenzuela (Calexico), Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket), Tom Hagerman (DeVotchKa), and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case). Rumery co-produces and records with Nick Luca at Elliott Smith’s former studio, New Monkey Studio in Van Nuys, CA. He often works with Craig Schumacher at WaveLab Studio in Tucson, AZ. He recently produced Arlo Hannigan’s forthcoming album, and two albums for Jeremy Bass: Winter Bare and New York in Spring; the title track from the latter album won the John Lennon Songwriting Prize. Additional albums include the self-titled The Joy of Harm, The Whale Tales’ Methods, and his own Riverside, Outside Mullinger, 4000 Miles, Ivanov, and FlowerMan. Current and upcoming projects include albums with Big Weather, The Walker Project, and a solo album inspired by his frequent air travel.
