The La MaMa Archives is a not-for-profit organization sustained by La MaMa E.T.C. The Archives are made available to the public as an educational service to the performing arts community, the press, scholars, historians, emerging artists, and students of theatre the world over. Artists’ works and all related materials represented by the archive are subject to and protected by all national and international copyright laws.
Spanning the fifty year history of La MaMa and the off-off Broadway movements of the sixties, the Archive provides visitors with a unique glimpse into the history and evolution of contemporary experimental theatre in America and abroad. The extraordinary and complex development of La MaMa is a blueprint for innovation, invention, risk, daring and chutzpah, created by founder and artistic director Ellen Stewart in 1961. The Archive contains Chronological Playlists, Individual Production Files, Troupe Files, International Tour Files, Photos, Original Artworks, and Videos of works by La MaMa Playwrights, Composers, Directors, Actors, Designers, Choreographers, Dancers, Musicians, Painters, Puppeteers, Masters Media Artists, Performance Artists, Cabaret, Graphic and Photographic Artists.
In addition, the Archive often plays host to groups of theatre students, regional theatre members, visiting theatre artists from abroad, scholars, historians, doctorial candidates etc. who may view the history of La MaMa videos: “La MaMa Pushcart,” “The 20th Anniversary Compilation”, La MaMa a Historical Compilation 60′s to the 90′s, “TNT’s Portrait of America, ” Ellen Stewart’s “La MaMa Umbria International” as well as clippings, reviews, letters production photos programs, scripts, posters, videos of performances, articles, and artifacts by La MaMa artists and visiting international artists.
