Tiffany Mills Company | After the Feast

May 12, 2016 - May 15, 2016

Ellen Stewart Theatre | 66 E 4th Street; 2nd Floor

Thursday to Saturday at 7pm; Sunday at 4pm

After the Feast is an evening-length project that fuses movement by Tiffany Mills, dramaturgy by Kay Cummings, music by Jonathan Melville Pratt, visual design by Dennis O’Leary, costumes by Mary Kokie McNaugher, lighting by Chris Hudacs and performance by six ferocious dancers. This new work imagines an urban dystopia caused by vanishing resources. Mills’ highly physical movement and daring partnering propel the performers further into this dire situation – the next phase of human existence. In the work collaborators ask: Can a community emerge from an urban wasteland? What will remain after the final feast? Images of possession, disembodiment, and dissection haunt this project, yet the performers are able to find light. After the Feast will be presented by La MaMa May 12-15, 2016, as part of the La MaMa Moves! Festival, and will mark the company's 15th anniversary season.

About the Artists

The Tiffany Mills Company was formed in 1995 and incorporated in New York City as a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization in 2000. The company investigates highly physical movement (drawn from release technique, partnering, and improvisation) to build layered material with emotional and psychological resonance. Mills’ movement palate is enriched by her commitment to the cross-fertilization of forms. She collaborates with contemporary composers, writers, theater directors, designers and filmmakers, to not only blur lines between mediums, but also to discover layered methods of constructing dances. Mills’ process of creation is collaborative and ensemble-based. With each work the performers draw from their personal lives. Mills directs her work to focus on the vulnerability of being human, often investigating themes of communication, connection, relationship, exposure, breakdown, and transformation. She places the audience in an active role by asking them to be part of the performance. She challenges them to participate in an experience, to absorb and respond. Mills has created over 20 works, which have been presented nationally and internationally. The company actively performs in New York City, and has been called “One of the real talents of the emerging generation” by the Village Voice, and “Fresh, smart and accomplished” by the New York Times. The company most recently was selected by the Brooklyn Academy of Music with the Kennedy Center, to participate in the inaugural session of BAM’s Professional Development Program, which culminated in a NYC Season at BAM Fisher (2013).
