La Galleria: Space Time

By Matthew Alie & James Powers

Join us Saturday, May 5th at 8:30PM for a performance by GRAMMY and Emilie Weibel. Grammy is an ensemble of acoustic instruments and electronic textures that floats between ambient minimal and pop music. Emilie Weibel is a haunting pop noise vocalist and member of the duo Clebs.

Matthew Alie and James Powers present work that drifts in the built landscape – the landscape rendered by humans. They dispense elements of fiction and reality, exactitude and ham-fisted approximation, spillage and containment. In Moby Duck, the almost humorous mishap of rubber ducks might be an apocryphal environment blight, but also the tidal coordinates for a fastidious crew of beachcombers and for the more fatalistic and abject – the sublime. The degree to which narrative shapes the manicured analytical framework of our lives provides ample room for Alie’s and Powers’ part-experimental, and part-painterly riposte.

“Are we to grow used to the idea that every man relives ancient torments, which are all the more profound because they grow comic with repetition? “

Founded in 1984, La Galleria is a nonprofit gallery committed to nurturing experimentation in the visual arts. La Galleria encourages an active dialogue between new media, performance, the plastic and visual arts, curatorial projects, and educational initiatives. It serves the East Village community by offering diverse programming to an inter-generational audience, and expanding the parameters of a traditional gallery space. As a non-profit, La Galleria is able to provide artists and curators with unique exhibition opportunities that are largely out of reach in a commercial gallery setting.
