La MaMa Kids

La MaMa Kids - a series of creative workshops for the young and the young at heart. Master artists from La MaMa teach theatre crafts in workshops that encourage imaginative play and hands-on learning. Children and adults learn the basics of storytelling, dance, mask and puppet-making, and more!

Fun for the whole family! (ages 4 – 104!)

Tickets: $10 per family, no family turned away
Saturday mornings at 11 o’clock
Workshops last 45 minutes and are on the 2nd Saturday of every month.

Workshops are limited to 30 children
Performances are limited to 75 audience members

Immerse Yourself!


Jane Catherine Shaw – February 9, 2013: 

 

Assemble a colorful fish puppet using pre-cut parts, or cut out your own parts and learn the basics of shadow puppetry construction and manipulation.  Add rods and then dive in the light pond and take your fish for a swim! Recommended for the whole family.

The Magic Pot

Mask Making

A fun movement workshop for the whole family with an interactive jungle where children get to make their own an animal mask and create their own dance as you move through the jungle of your imagination!

Mindful Music

Perry Yung – June 8, 2013:

An opportunity for the entire family to engage in creative fun! A family fun workshop on the Zen concept of mindful music. Using the Japanese shakuhachi bamboo flute, temple gongs and storytelling, kids of all ages play theatrical games and craft a take home musical instrument!

Pelandok the Mouse Deer and Other Malaysian Folktales

Jane Catherine Shaw & Rebecca Leigh Silverman – February 23, 2013:

Three popular recurring characters and their stories are interwoven to make one exciting piece of theater for young audiences. Throughout the story, traditional and authentic Malaysian music is played, and audiences will hear the sounds of native birds, animals and insects in the soundtrack. All of the voices are performed live, making this a rich and compelling piece of theater for young audiences. This show is a firm 46.32 minutes, and the performers are happy to answer questions at the close of the show.

Katcha and the Devil and Other Czech Tales with Strings

Vít Horejš – April 27, 2013:

For fifty years, a troupe of antique marionettes was confined to a dusty closet at Jan Hus Church, in the heart of New York’s Czechoslovak neighborhood.  Discovered by Vít Horejš, Czechoslovak storyteller, author, and puppeteer, the 24-inch century-old masterpieces of Czech puppet makers have since brought joy to thousands of spectators young and old. Vít Horejš and his marionettes tell favorite Czech stories he learned in his home town, Prague, from his father and grandmother: Katcha and the Devil (A shepherd outwits the devil who is pursued by a dance-loving shrew).
