The collaborative choreography of Veiled Reflections explores the secrets people hold and carry. It investigates how secrets shape the ways we move through our lives, view ourselves and each other. Experience  how secrets can be transformed from what keeps us separate into what keeps us connected. Witness a dynamic multimedia dialogue between movement, live musicians, and contributors who have dared to share their secrets through embodied practice and writing. Original choreography, Her Veiled Reflections, conceived as a 2012-2013 Artist-in-Residence at The Performance Project @ University Settlement.

Join the movement and find release through MOPDC’s Veiled Reflections Workshop and Sharing. Let loose your inner dancer. Investigate how the secrets we keep shape the ways we feel in our bodies and the ways we move through our lives. The workshop is for all movers, no dance experience necessary.  Connect with the power that comes from collectively and creatively sharing our truths. Participants are welcome to join MOPDC on stage in a sharing of the Veiled Reflections choreography! Come out and shed some ish.

ABOUT ESTROGENIUS FESTIVAL

The EstroGenius Festival is the longest running festival celebrating women’s voices and work in NYC.  Begun in Manhattan Theatre Source in 2000 as a short-play festival, the festival has launched and supported hundreds of artists in its 18 years. 2017 was the festival’s first time in its new home hosted by Frigid at The Kraine Theatre on E. 4th St with special collaborations with La Mama Experimental Theater and Downtown Arts.

Currently at the helm of the festival are Melissa Riker and Maura Nguyen Donohue.

In concurrence with the inclusive values the festival was founded on, this executive team focuses on art generated, written, directed and performed by female identifying bodies, while also welcoming wise male artists into the festival.  The producers strive to create a full, empowering, festival dedicated to a community that hears, sees and celebrates women and non-conforming artists in all of their dynamic diversity.

Founded in 2005 by Bessie Award winning choreographer, Joya Powell, Movement of the People Dance Company is dedicated to addressing historic and present sociocultural injustices through dance. Primarily a Dance Theater company, their choreography combines dynamic Contemporary Dance with traditional dances, and develops a sensitive balance of pedestrian gestural phrases with grounded visceral movements that use breath and musicality at its core. Over the years MOPDC has performed in various celebrated dance festivals and venues including: BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House, Lincoln Center’s Meet the Artist Saturdays, SummerStage, Casita Maria (Resident Performing Artist 2014-2015), The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Triskelion’s Split Bill Series, FLICfest, Dance on the Greenway (commission), The Performance Project @ University Settlement (Artist-in-Residence 2012-2013), chashama (Resident Artist 2015 & 2016), Movement Research @ Judson Church, Amnesty International’s Human Rights Art Festival (Maryland & NYC), York University (Toronto, ON), The Southern Vermont Dance Festival, Riverside Theatre, BAX, Huntington Arts Festival (Long Island), Dance New Amsterdam, The FLEA Theater, BAAD!, Evoke’s Celebrate Dance Festival (San Diego), and The Outlet Dance Festival (New Jersey). In April 2015, MOPDC was featured in Dance Magazine for their choreographic journey in their company repertory piece Her Veiled Reflections. The company holds an annual Free Day of Dance and acclaimed Winter Intensive. MOPDC is dedicated to connecting cultures through dance, composing socially conscious choreography, and community engagement.  www.movementofthepeopledance.com
