La MaMa's SQUIRTS gathers some of the most exciting voices from New York City’s queer performance world, across the generations. SQUIRTS provides an experimental playground for queer and trans performance artists to produce live art with the creative and technical support of a historic Off-Broadway downtown theater. Over three nights, SQUIRTS sculpts the fabric of queer community to pose questions, honor legacies, and ignite the present.
Squirts was founded in 2012 by Dan Fishback, in conjunction with La MaMa specifically to address the queer generational disconnect that had been exacerbated by AIDS and gentrification, and has since been crucial—not only in building connections between queer artists and audiences of different ages, but in providing an annual platform for mostly QTPOC artists who are often ignored by major arts institutions.
Squirts reclaims La MaMa's original legacy of uplifting underground art to a bigger and more impactful stage.
La MaMa’s Squirts 2024 is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
