La MaMa Kids: Make a Mask Celebrating "Day of the Dead"

Interactive workshop with Mariana Garcia Tinoco

Students will learn how to make a traditional alebrije mask, which will be used for play/dance. Alebrijes are a Mexican tradition influenced by the original peoples of the Mesoamerican region. In the Zapotec tradition, parents assigned an animal protector to every newborn, known as Tona. In the Nahua culture, Tonas are spirited animals that eventually become nahuales (a human with the ability to transform into their Tona-Animal).

Mariana debuted in Mexico's City Festival of ExpresArte from UNAM in 2012. Later on, she was recognized by INDESOL and Asistencia Promoción y Cultura A.C. in 2015 for her cultural contributions to art. In 2016 she participated as a solo artist in the Cultural Festival of Tultitlán and later that same year in the Festival of La Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Emperatriz de America during the Holyday’s celebration. Mariana has also developed as a singer in different performances and concerts. In 2018 she came to the US to study Visual arts in NY ART Studio to then enroll at Pace Univeristy's Fine Arts Program. The Society of Fellows awarded her in 2021 for her piece The Defeated exhibited at the 40th Annual Meeting. Mariana has worked as a curatorial assistant for the database creation of the George Stephanopoulos Collection. After graduation, she worked in puppetry workshops with Loco7, had a solo exhibition at IATI, and worked as a live painter in the play Los Colores de Frida by Teatro SEA. She designed posters for Psicopatía Jauja by Corezon and worked as a graphic designer for Spacebridge.
