Two Dogs is an exceptional example of contemporary Chinese avant-garde theater. Since its premiere in 2007, it has been performed more than 2000 times, both throughout China and at international venues and festivals.
Directed by Meng Jinghui, China’s most influential and celebrated theatre director, the play combines the creative techniques of Chinese comedy folk performance, Italian improvisational comedy, vaudeville, and absurdist drama. Its dark comedy explores the relationship between ideals and real challenges of life in contemporary urban and rural China.
All Performances Presented in Chinese with English Subtitles!
“When the Beatles wrote ‘Yellow Submarine,’ they probably didn’t imagine it wrapping up a National Theatre of China production about ambitious pooches….A tossed salad of improv, rock music, laurel-and-hardy-style double act and careful social satire. ”
– The Washington Post
“This is a simple, free and sincere comedy. It analyzes the real world from a dog’s perspective. The actors’ impromptu performances are enough to make other actors feel shame! Don’t miss it, but be prepared before the show. Those two dogs will not only take away your laughter, tears, applause, but maybe even mobile phones, cameras, mineral water and Money! ”
—Xu Zheng, Renowned Chinese Film, TV, and Stage Actor
