ABOUT
Memory Generation is a new interactive, experiential theater work that blends theatrical narrative, creative participation, and communal exchange in a memory café environment—creative social spaces designed specifically for people living with dementia, and their friends and families, that focus on creative experiences, not diagnosis.
Developed through extensive community interviews, artist gatherings, and lived experience, the work is shaped by real stories of caregiving, memory loss, and connection, reflecting the voices of those directly navigating these journeys.
Through storytelling and fostering creative connections, it will explore the challenges, moments of humor, and unexpected losses and victories that arise when dementia impacts individuals, families, and communities.
This new work is written by Sara Zatz and directed by Sherrine Azab (A Host of People, Detroit), with engagement support from Community and Project Advisor Andrew Morton (Detroit), and featuring an intergenerational cast, Manny Dunn, Kirya Traber, Aaron Landsman, and Tamar Rogoff.
MEMORY GENERATION ACCESS INFORMATION
Memory Generation is designed as an inviting space that is welcoming to all, no matter what their relationship to memory loss may be, while focusing on needs and experiences of people with Dementia and Caregivers. It is set in a “memory cafe” environment, unique creative and social spaces specifically for people with dementia, and their friends and families, that focus on creative experiences, not diagnosis. The theatrical experience explores scenes of caregiving and care receiving, moments of connection, joy, isolation, and humor, and an invitation to build a more holistic community response that can be rooted in support, care, and reciprocity.
Each performance begins and ends with 30 minutes of creative activities for all audience members, and suited for anyone who would benefit from being in the space and becoming acclimated before the performance commences, or who will enjoy reflection time after.
We recognize that each individual experience of living with dementia is unique and varies from person to person and day to day. We particularly invite people with early to moderate memory loss and care partners to attend, and welcome questions prior to the performance that may support this experience. Please contact Ariel Reich, Accessibility Coordinator at comms@pinkfang.org with any questions.
