On Monday, 12/15/25 at 7:00 PM at La Mama in the Community Space, join us for this special one night only reading and celebration of the 25th Anniversary of “Boys Don’t Wear Lipstick!”

Written and performed by Brian Belovitch, along with Jenne Vath he will revise his role in this 2000 GLAAD Media Award nominated play for Outstanding Broadway/Off- Broadway Production. It has been described as a journey from boyhood to manhood – by way of a 15-year detour through womanhood. Belovitch who was once known in the 1980’s NYC nightlife as Tish Gervais, The Girl With Something Extra, he recounts his unusual journey by retracing the defining moments of his life in a deeply moving and at times humorous way.

 

BIO

Brian Belovitch, (he,him) is a multi-hyphenate as an actor, singer, author, public speaker and mental health professional. He has a storied career as a writer and gender outlier. He was a featured guest on The Moth Storytelling Hour on NPR relating a story from his critically acclaimed memoir, Trans Figured: My Journey from Boy to Girl to Woman to Man. During the height of the NYC club scene frenzy in the mid 80’s he lived as a vivacious trans woman. As Tish Gervais, he was breaking barriers as a nightclub performer at the Limelight, Palladium, Pyramid, Studio 54, Area and Danceteria as the “Bombshell of Rock n Roll.” He most recently appeared in the 2024 HOT Festival at Dixon Place in NY in his new play; Long Term Survive – Her. He’s appeared on various New York stages at La Mama, Dixon Place, 13th St. Rep, Here, PS122, for more than three decades in various theatrical incarnations, most notably as a member of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company. In 2023, he created the role of Lavinia Monteblanc De La Croix in Joel Greenhouse’s, Twisted at Theatre for the New City in NYC. by Charles Ludlam at LaMama marked the 50th anniversary of the Ridiculous. In 2019, Brian was a recipient of the Acker Award for writing that is given annually to East Village, NY avant- garde artists. As a playwright, his groundbreaking Off-Broadway play, “Boys Don’t Wear Lipstick!”, was honored with a 2000 GLAAD nomination. Jenne Vath: Jenne Vath is honored to be on board Brian Belovitch‘s “Boys Don’t Wear Lipstick”. Vath participated in the 2020 online presentation of BDWL directed by Everett Quinton. Vath also acted in Brian’s readings of Tom Eyen’s “Women Behind Bars”, George Osterman’s “Brother Truckers”, and Charles Ludlam’s “Bluebeard”. Vath has worked extensively at La MaMa, including many readings for La MaMa’s Experiments Series with Resident Director and Experiments Founder George Ferencz. Vath is a founding member of The Experimentals along with actors John-Andrew Morrison and Jason Howard, the performance group created by Ferencz. Most recently, Vath acted in The Experimentals’ acclaimed revival of H.M Koutoukas’ “Medea of the Laundromat”, a co-production of the Lucille Lortel Theatre and La MaMa ETC. Thank you Brian.
