Watch “The Recluse” as part of WNET’s “Broadway and Beyond” Collection
June 25, 2026
We are thrilled to see La MaMa’s radical avant-garde history out in the world! As part of their third annual Broadway and Beyond collection, The WNET Group (home to New York’s PBS stations THIRTEEN and ALL ARTS) is unearthing rare gems from the archives—including a very special piece of our own legacy. They are streaming the rare 1967 television broadcast of our Off-Off-Broadway production of Paul Foster’s The Recluse, directed by the legendary Tom O’Horgan and featuring brilliant performances by Bryarly Lee and Ruth White. Originally aired as part of a landmark triple bill on NET Playhouse, this historic footage also includes incredible interviews with our beloved founder, Ellen Stewart, alongside Paul Foster. We are incredibly proud to see our roots celebrated alongside the wider world of theater, proving that the spirit of experimental art continues to ripple through our culture.
