Third Tuesday Care Cafés
THIS MONTH:
To honor International Women’s Month, we are partnering with the Nuyorican Poets Café to host the Mujeres Hablan/Women Speak Care Café,dedicated to Women and Spoken Word
In the spirit of our ongoing Care Cafés, we will gather in an atmosphere of care and celebrate the beauty of our diversities, the unique power of our own voicesand the extraordinary beauty and power of language.
All are welcome – all those who identify as women and those who love and support women – to come and sit at our café tables and consider this question:
If you had the attention of the entire world,
what would you say?
As usual there will be simple activities to accompany our conversations: some hand work with words, a collective Speak-Out possibility and some ways to honor the poets amongst us – both past and present. Perhaps you could bring a favorite to share or pin on the wall.
As inspiration here is a poem by one of our cohosts,
Caridad De La Luz/ aka La Bruja dedicated to Julia de Burgos, a Puerto Rican Nationalist poet who is the foundation of Nuyorican poetry.
Querida Julia
Dear Julia
Despierto pensando en tus “porqués”
I awaken thinking of your “whys”
Envuelta en respuestas de la esclavitud
Wrapped in responses to slavery
No llores Julia, que eres una reina
Do not cry Julia, for you are a queen
Tu nombre baila en mi boca
Your name dances in my mouth
Y tus poemas en mi cabeza
And your poems in my head
Vives Julia, no estás muerta
You live Julia, you are not dead
Hasta las aves de la madrugada
Even the morning birds
Abren sus alas para ti
Open their wings for you
Y pronuncian tus poemas sus cantos
Pronouncing your poems in their song
No eras loca, pero revolucionaria
You were not crazy, but revolutionary
Nuestra incomprendida bohemia
Our misunderstood bohemian
Soltera nunca, contigo misma estabas casada
Single never, with you yourself you were married
Casada con la luna, el sol y todas las estrellas
Married to the moon, the sun and all of the stars
Amada por una perla gloriosa que nunca duerme
Loved by a glorious pearl that never sleeps
Entiendes bella Julia, tu importancia
Understand beautiful Julia, your importance
Porque entre tu espíritu y la eternidad
Because between your spirit and eternity
No hay distancia
There is no distance
About
A Care Café asks us to turn up as we are, with no specific agenda, expectation, or discussion topic, simply asking the question: How can we maintain an attitude of care in an uncaring world?
Set up like a conventional café with small tables and chairs, the Care Café acts as a temporary venue for community and conversation with some simple table activities set up within a framework of care. Just by entering the room, we acknowledge something of our own needs in the present moment and our desire to give and receive care.
You can RSVP with La Mama to let us know you are coming, but you can drop in anytime between 5-7 pm.
